The assessment
What is a Mummy MOT®?
A Mummy MOT® is a specialist postnatal assessment carried out by a certified practitioner. It has been developed specifically to assess the physical changes that can occur during pregnancy and childbirth.
Rather than focusing on a single symptom, the assessment looks at how your whole body is functioning. Pregnancy affects posture, breathing, core stability, pelvic floor function and movement patterns, and these changes can continue long after your baby has been born.
During your appointment, we'll assess how your body has recovered, identify any areas of weakness or dysfunction and create a personalised rehabilitation plan to help you achieve your individual goals.
Whether you gave birth six weeks ago or six years ago, it's never too early, or too late, to invest in your recovery.
Is it right for you?
Who is a Mummy MOT® for?
A Mummy MOT® is suitable for women following both vaginal birth and Caesarean section. You may benefit from an assessment if you:
- Are around six weeks postpartum and would like reassurance that your body is recovering well
- Want to return to exercise safely
- Have ongoing back, pelvic or hip pain
- Notice weakness through your core
- Have abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti)
- Experience leaking urine when coughing, sneezing or exercising
- Feel pressure or heaviness around your pelvic floor
- Have concerns about your posture after pregnancy
- Want guidance on returning to running, Pilates, yoga or the gym
- Simply want to understand your body better after childbirth
Many women assume that symptoms such as leaking, back pain or abdominal weakness are simply part of becoming a mother. While these symptoms are common, they are not something you have to accept without support.
Your appointment
What happens during your appointment?
Your appointment lasts approximately one hour and provides a detailed assessment of your postnatal recovery.
01Initial consultation
We'll begin by discussing:
- Your pregnancy and birth history
- Any previous injuries or medical conditions
- Your current symptoms
- Your exercise and activity levels
- Your personal goals
- Any concerns or questions you may have
This allows us to understand the bigger picture before beginning your assessment.
02Posture and movement assessment
Pregnancy changes the way your body moves and adapts. We'll assess:
- Standing posture
- Walking pattern
- Functional movement
- Balance
- Breathing mechanics
- Overall movement quality
This helps identify areas that may be contributing to discomfort or limiting your recovery.
03Abdominal assessment
Your abdominal muscles work together to provide stability and support. We'll assess:
- Diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation)
- Core muscle activation
- Abdominal control
- Coordination during movement
Where appropriate, you'll be shown how to activate these muscles effectively as part of your rehabilitation.
04Pelvic floor assessment
Where clinically appropriate, a pelvic floor assessment may be offered to assess muscle strength, coordination and function.
This assessment is always fully explained beforehand and is only carried out with your informed consent. If you decide not to proceed with an internal assessment, alternative external assessments and advice can still be provided.
05Personalised rehabilitation plan
Following your assessment, you'll receive a personalised recovery plan which may include:
- Individual exercises
- Core rehabilitation
- Pelvic floor guidance
- Advice on returning to exercise
- Lifestyle recommendations
- Hands-on osteopathic treatment where appropriate
- Recommendations for any follow-up appointments
Every rehabilitation programme is tailored specifically to you.
